We have chosen The Wave Project as our Charity of the Year

The Wave Project is a brilliant organisation with strong local links and an increasingly vital purpose. 1 in 5 children in the UK struggle with their social, emotional or mental health and over 500,000 are on waiting lists for the support they need. The Wave Project helps young people aged 8–18 build confidence and resilience through six-week surf therapy courses led by trained staff and volunteers.

Some of our colleagues have their own personal connections with the charity.

“My child took part in the surf therapy course, and the impact was significant. At the time, we were navigating the process of securing a diagnosis and finding the right support. Like many families, we found that accessing help can leave parents feeling stuck.

Over the six weeks we saw a real change. The sea became a place where my child could feel calm, supported and included. Learning to try, “wipe out”, laugh, and try again helped build confidence in a way that felt natural and encouraging. Just as importantly, the programme helped them build trust with supportive adults outside the family and feel part of a team.

Years later, my child still talks about the volunteers who gave their time and encouragement, and about how the experience made them feel. That’s what makes The Wave Project so special: it gives young people positive experiences and something they can carry forward long after the course ends.”

“The Wave Project has helped my nieces process their grief after the loss of their Daddy in 2020 when they were only 7 and 4 years old.  They are now happy and confident young ladies and know it’s ok to be sad, sometimes angry and that we are all there for them no matter what.  Thank you [The Wave Project] for the small yet large part you have played in helping them come to terms with the challenges of the overwhelming emotions they have felt through their loss.”

Throughout the year we’ll be fundraising to help The Wave Project continue to deliver its surf therapy programmes for local children and young people. So far we have raised £920 though our 1000K in April challenge, in which the Murrells team collectively walked and ran a whopping 1285K!

If you’d like to support our Charity of the Year, please follow our updates and get involved in upcoming events.
